the tarantismo project - by linda cleary 3mns
The Tarantismo Project a poetry led mixed media installation piece The Tarantismo was a ritualistic dance from south Italy danced by the rural women to rid the effect of a mythical spider bite; also called 'morso d'amore', bite of love. The work uses the Tarantismo as a springboard but contemporises, agitates and explores its political and social aspects; our social spiderbite, our collective and personal 'morso d'amore'. It creates an arena of discomfort as well as beauty, questions the theme of madness and accepted ideas of gender role, desire, love and loss. The installation is presented as in a rudimentary living room with with letters, poems, and other poetry and prose in drawers and cupboards for the viewer to open and read, photographic images are displayed and personal CD walkmans are also around the space with various audio tracks, samples and interviews being played, whilst a looped audio piece and film and played. This work includes contributions of text, interviews and images from a wide international community. 'Powerful, uncompromising. Tough, lyrical beauty. Packs poetic punches with aching sensitivity. Vedova nera Italiana,Latrodectus Tredecimguttatus con oteche,30Km a nord-owest di Roma,chiamata malmignatta,bottone,ragno di volterra,arza,argia.. Molto velenosa,appartiene al genere delle vedove nere(Latrodectus) di cui fa parte anche la piu' nota vedova nera americana (Latrodectus mactans). Questo ragno fa parte dell'antica cultura e del folklore della nostra Italia,e assieme alla Lycosa Tarantula fa parte della nostra antica cultura popolare:la diffusione del tarantismo in Puglia e in alcune regioni tirreniche,e la conseguente nascita della Taranta-Pizzica in Puglia,della Tarantella in Campania,del Saltarello romano sui Monti Tiburtini e nel resto del Lazio (danze nate per il morso erroneamente attribuito alla Tarantola appunto-Lycosa Tarantula) gli innumerevoli riti praticati in Sardegna quando si veniva morsi "dall' Arza malecumbessa",con danze e canti intorno a persone infilate nei forni scaldati o nel letame fino al collo..vi fa tornare al passato,al sole,all'odore del fieno,il grano,antiche musiche lontane nel tempo e balli sollevati dalla paura e dal tormento popolare del suo morso.
