ubaidullah jan kandahari - qarar qarar qadam rawakhla .... I. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: It is inconceivable to not notice the sweet and melodious voice of Ubaidullah Jan. His distinct and unique style placed him in a category of Pukhto singers that may never have a substitute. He mesmerized millions of Pukhtun with his songs in his homeland Afghanistan, and neighboring Pukhtunistan to the east. Unfortunately he did not live long enough. The way he died makes it even more compelling for Pukhtun to sorely miss him, and mourn his death. His brutal death for such a trivial reason [as narrated below by Noorzai] was just appalling. Ubaid Ullah Jan is burried at the base of 'Khoozak' mountain' in Chaman - the border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. In a tribute to this great singer of Pukhto, PASHTANA of Kandahar wrote in her comments and messages: [He was born in Kandahar, Afghanistan. There is not going to be another Ubaid Ullah Jan Kandahari. His songs take me back to Kandahar. I knew him when I was 7 years old. He was a great man, a great singer, a wonderful son, and brother. He IS Truly MISSED very much by the ones that LOVE AND RESPECT him EVEN TODAY]. Providing a brief biographical note of Ubaid Ullah Jan, Noorzai [of Afghanistan] wrote in his message: [Ubaid Ullah Jan was born in Kandahar city's 3rd borough (Drayama Nahiya) or division. He finished high school and did not pursue any higher education. He started his music career at high school but he was not singing as a professional. He would sing just here and there in parties or with friends. He recorded, I would say, more than 200 audio cassettes. He was killed by a local militia man named [Tor Jan] because once in Kandahar city Ubaidullah Jan refused to sing his favorite song in a party. Ubaidullah Jan tried to escape to Pakistan in late 80s, but he was captured near [Takhtapull district of] Kandahar by Tor Jan, and killed. May Allah bless his soul]. Others who are familiar with how Ubaid Ullah Jan died, tell that before he was killed the captors forced him to sing for two nights. They taped the occasion and gave it to "Tor Jan or Thora" who was behind the whole incident. Thora was killed later on by other enemies along with his family. Thora would brag about his heinous crime and tell people that it was him who arranged to kill Ubaid Ullah Jan because I wanted to be known. II.
