personal computing: historic beginnings [Recorded: November 5, 2008] The roots of "personal computers" - that is, machines that are not shared between users - date back to at least the late 1950s. Within a decade, several more of these "one machine, one user" computers were developed; and the idea of a user having direct control over the computer was established, at least within academia. In 1968, young computer scientist Alan Kay gave a presentation on the FLEX Machine at a meeting of computer science graduate students and saw the first working versions of a new flat panel plasma display technology. This led to discussions about how nice it would be to (someday) place the FLEX computer itself on the back of such a display to make a notebook-sized computer. A visit a few months later to MIT computer scientist and educator Seymour Papert and to a school with children doing advanced math with Papert's LOGO programming language, produced an epiphany in Kay. He decided to make "A Personal Computer for Children of All Ages". This was to be in the form of a compact notebook using both tablet and keyboard, a flat-screen display, GUI, and the wireless networking that defense funding agency ARPA was starting to experiment with. This idea eventually acquired the name "Dynabook" as an homage to what the printed book has meant to civilization and learning. It is also a gesture to a future in which not just the content of "books" will be dynamic, but the relationship of people to computers will itself also change. The founding of Xerox PARC a few years after the Dynabook concept provided support and a context for developing many of these ideas. In fact, the PARC Alto workstation was originally called "the interim Dynabook". Many of the results from this research influenced commercial computing, including the bit-mapped screen, high-quality text and graphics, overlapping windows and an icon-based GUI, desktop publishing, object-oriented programming, and many others. In this lecture, Alan Kay first presents a historical overview of computing and technological developments that led to personal computing and influenced his thoughts on creating the Dynabook. Then Kay is joined by Charles Thacker and Mary Lou Jepsen in a panel discussion moderated by Steve Hamm of BusinessWeek magazine. historic combat toulon begles 1991 R.C. Toulon / Begles-Bordeaux 1/8th Final French Championship season 1990 / 1991 This is only the 10 firsts minutes of the game. Firstable:this video was shot by Toulon Rugby Club and not by T.V.Thats why there is only one angle, and mainly appears actions in the game. Some violentest fights scenes had been cut off because they were off game, and disappeared for ever. When the clubs were cited, and videos asked for details after referees reports, the club explained that the cameraman missed some scenes because he sometime left out to smoke a cigarette. It was the last match in Mayol Stadium as coach for the emblematic Toulon mentor Daniel Herrero. This game was the home game for him,the last one will be the off game in Begles a week later. He is poet, a leader,a writer, and a war commandant who lead Toulon to the top during the 80s,with 2 national titles and 2 finalists places. Now he comments on Radio and could made a famous pair with the Professor Thiam When Daniel Herrero accepted to coach in Toulon in 1983,he built a mythic pack of strong characters. The only thing he asked before accepting the job was Do you want to be a rugby team or a wild horde ?.That was the deal. Some great players, the prop Manu Diaz, the legendary halfscrum Jerome Gallion, ended their carreer.Toulon was known in the 80s to be a brutal, powerful, perhaps violent team, all based on its pack strongness. But the winger Pascal Jehl was also the best try scorer in 1986 and 1987 but never been caped with France. In 1990-1991,the first line of Begles and the turtle maul technic lead by a man called Bernard Laporte, ruled over all championship, destroyed all French packs one by one. They were young, ambitious, and they tried to reverse the pressure on Toulon through the press. They felt the end of Toulons reign on the scrums. They wanted to defeat the monster on its field.Vincent Moscato titled on a newspaper that We will push the humanity 30 centuries back on this game. Of course, they targeted Toulons pride. The reds and blacks veterans wanted to celebrate the last game of their mentor,by responding on the field as high as he expected of them 9 years before. It should be the last war,the honour combat, the jubilee for Mayols crowd. Eric Champ used to make his shoelaces before entering on the field, and visitors used to enter under shouts and fury of 15 000 Toulon fans, but Begles did not.And verbal provocations started by walking on the field. So at this moment, everything was expected but a rugby game. Then a timeless silent minute had to be done.A young Toulon junior player shouted Moscato mother ****er!on the crowd, his name is Christian Califano.Under a blue electric sky,the crowd goes mental.A mix of fear, excitation, adrenaline,a pure roman antic feeling, gladiators face to face, the combat to death could began. Some will find it shameful, scandalous,so the press that started the fire will be outraged the day after. But rugby is a culture in Toulon,Mayol is a temple unviolated for years, and its pack force is a religion. Some will find it pathetic, others heroic. As War. Christophe Deylaud kicked off outline to begin the game with a midfield scrum. It was announced until few days. The scrum of the century between the two strongest pack ever in France. It was a parody.Serge Simon falled referee's short.Penalty.First minute of the match,Begles refused the combat,3-0.Hysteria.Then hardest things happened. 35 Eric Champ returned the Vincent Moscatos jersey on his head and savagely head-butted him. (not on the video) 42 Thierry The Indian Louvet wipped his bloody mouth on his opponent jersey. (not on the video) 60 Jean-Michel Casalini is out and replaced by Raibault. 62 Raibault is violently rucked by Serge Simon, broken jaw. Blind referee did not see anything. Raibault must play with an head-egg bandage shaped. 69 Serge Simon is knock out, his jaw is destroyed, he will be replaced and will never claim why. Toulon won 18-9. At the end beglais told that Toulon will never dare to come in Bordeaux for the off game. It was a more correct game. Toulon lost and Begles will be national champion 1991. Many veterans stopped their career. But it didnt matter. A year later, Toulon with a youth warriors players will beat Biarritz and Serge Blanco in final, it was the last game of the greatest fullback and the come back of the piece of wood (Brennus Shield) on the mediterranean bay.
