By Eppie Vega Staff Writer Aspen Morning: an example of Feld's cityscape work. Two ladies entered the Howard Austin Feld Gallery in Miami Beach and stared at the "cityscapes" displayed at the gallery. They were interested in his unique style of photographing places like Miami Beach, Aspen and New York City and the way he uses digital technology to alter colors and shadows. Inside was Howard Austin Feld himself who spoke to the ladies about his work and explained the process of making those kinds of portraits, and a few minutes later the ladies walked out satisfied with a cityscape of Miami Beach. The Howard Austin Feld Gallery opened in 2002 and there are talks of opening in other major cities, although nothing has been planned out yet. Feld already sells his work in approximately 100 countries. Although his portraits of cityscapes and landscapes are becoming very popular, these are not the artworks that he's mainly known for. The Miami Beach native is mostly known for his portraits of quasi-perfect people with little or no clothes on. The erotic portraits are very intimate and descriptive, yet they seldom show the model's face because Feld concentrates on the body not the face. "This is the only gallery anywhere that offers this kind of work. I only sell my own work," Feld said. "There's a lot of behind the scenes work involved, but I do all the photography." Feld is in charge creating the perfect ambiance for shooting images of people, landscapes and animals. He then works on his computer to retouch the photographs, adjusting the colors and sometimes the shapes of the bodies he photographs. He also offers the service of commissioning personal portraits so that clients who don't wish to buy images of other people can have a specialized custom portrait created by Feld. In his studio, Feld photographs the client and then digitizes the picture to the subject's taste. "A lot of people prefer a commission piece. I have set up my house to be a studio with a very private area," Feld said. "I also do retouching because people want to look different or better than they are, so I do that for them." Who needs clothes while climbing mountains? The private area is the perfect atmosphere for the portrait. When Feld does a commission piece, he usually comes up with the ideas behind the portrait's look. "Most of the times, people just leave it to me. We work with it. Sometimes they want something a little edgy, and sometimes they don't. It's difficult for someone to do a nude portrait in front of someone they've never met," Feld said. "I guarantee that by the time we're finished I'm their best friend." This friendship develops because the client participates in the creative project as well. They work with the image from the computer, asking Feld what can be done to make the portrait look better. "They work with it as art directors behind the scenes," Feld said. Commission pieces require a lot of work that includes setting up the studio for the photography session, focusing on the alteration of colors and shapes, and finally adding all the finishing touches to create the look that the customer is looking for. Commissioned portraits start at $1,000. Feld is very selective about his commissioned portraits especially when photographing males. He finds it more difficult to add muscles to a man than to make a woman more voluptuous.
